- Summary
- Producer/director Joseph Papp receives his Frederick Douglass award at the New York Urban League's 17th annual Frederick Douglass Awards dinner. Given for distinguished leadership toward equal opportunity, the award is presented by performer Melba Moore. Moore credits Papp for launching her career by giving her a part in the musical Hair. She speaks of the equal-opportunity environment at the Public Theater, Papp's battles against social injustice in the theater, and provides an overview of his accomplishments in the advancement of black actors and playwrights. In accepting the award, Papp speaks of a letter he recently received with racial and religious epithets, criticizing him for casting black performers; the weakening alliance between Blacks and Jews coupled with a rising tide of anti-Semitism; and his future hopes for the Palestinians and Israel.
