- Description
- 1 videocassette (VHS) (5 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Segment one, Channel 2 news, aired WCBS-TV, March 2, 1983; begins at 58:00 and ends at 60:00. Dennis Cunningham reports on problems surrounding the release of the Universal Pictures' movie version of Pirates of Penzance, a Broadway musical produced by Joseph Papp based on the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. The same day the film opened at movie houses, it also premiered on paid television, alienating theater owners who have refused to book it. Responding to favorable reviews and high box office receipts, Universal is now attempting to save the film's theatrical run by investing in its advertising. Contains brief interview excerpts with Papp who discusses Universal's actions. Includes footage from the film.
- Segment two, aired Channel 7, WABC-TV, March 3, 1983; begins at 79:40 and ends at 82:30. At a rally in downtown New York City state heathcare workers protest Governor Mario Cuomo's proposed budget cuts and the layoffs that would result, while uptown at Lincoln Center, supporters of the arts such as producer/director Joseph Papp decry the governor's proposed cut of $4.5 million to the state's arts budget.
