Summary
  1. Entrant in the Dance Films Association's 32nd annual Dance on Camera Festival 2004. Documentary on French artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and his focus on dance as a theme for art, created in conjunction with the exhibition Degas and the dance at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The program explores not only his use of dance as a vehicle for his artistic experiments in composition, subject matter, and materials, but recognizes his close involvement with and knowledge of the ballet of his time, the dancers' offstage lives and milieu, and ballet technique. In addition to the many reproductions of his works that illustrate the program, dramatic re-creations bring to life aspects of his creative process, including his experiments in painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. Performance excerpts from La sylphide (re-created from Filippo Taglioni's original by Pierre Lacotte) and La bayadère (restaged by Rudolf Nureyev after Marius Petipa) suggest the stage pictures he saw. The modern-day counterparts of his dancers are seen in footage of ballet classes in the Paris Opéra's famous circular studio, and Martine Kahane guides the viewer on a tour behind the scenes at the Palais Garnier, the Opéra's present home.
