Profile of producer/director Joseph Papp. Papp discusses his feelings about his influence on American theater; his fight to prevent the Helen Hayes and Morosco theaters from being destroyed; his belief that the city should oversee development within the Broadway theater district; the formation of his first Shakespearean acting company based in a church in the East Village; his production of free Shakespeare plays in the city's parks as well as his work producing contemporary plays; his Jewish Orthodox upbringing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; his early interest in Shakespeare; his Jewish identity; his working relationship with his wife Gail Merrifield Papp; his family life; Shakespearean roles he would like to play; the power and influence of drama critics, including Frank Rich of The New York Times; his feelings about receiving a bad review for one of his shows; and how he would like to be remembered. Includes footage of Papp on a Broadway street, at the Public Theater, speaking before the New York City Council, and leading a protest to stop the destruction of the two historic theaters. Also includes photographs of Papp and his parents and brief excerpts from his productions A chorus line and The mystery of Edwin Drood.
