Description
  1. 24 microfilm reels; 35 mm.
Summary
  1. Reproduces the records of the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company, a savings bank chartered by Congress in early 1865 for the benefit of ex-slaves. In an effort to protect the interests of depositors and their heirs in the event of a depositor's death, the bank collected a substantial amount of detailed information about each depositor and his or her family. While most of the surviving records relate to the bank and its collapse, they are still a useful source for genealogical data concerning African American families for the period following the Civil War.
