They provide a survey of American popular music from the late 19th century to the 1970s, commenting on memorable individuals (composers and performers), musical genres, and specific musical works. Among the many personalities represented are: Scott Joplin, Victor Herbert, Irving Berlin, W.C. Handy, George M. Cohan, Al Jolson, Sophie Tucker, George Olsen, Louis Armstrong, George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby, Kate Smith, Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley, Stephen Sondheim, Simon and Garfunkel, and Burt Bacharach. Examples of ragtime, blues, jazz, Broadway musicals, big band music, rock and roll, and country and western are among the music performed. Morton Gould's Celebration '81, commissioned by the Foundation for New American Music especially for this telecast, concludes the program.
