Summary
  1. Part of The Studies Project, an ongoing series of discussions, performances, and other presentations. Following the performance of two dance works, choreographers Bill T. Jones and Stephanie Skura join arts administrators Joseph V. Melillo, director of Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival, and Tony Whitfield, associate director of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, in examining the role of marketing within the wider picture of creating and disseminating experimental dance. They discuss the experiences of their own dance companies or organizations. Topics include: the differences between marketing in the business and artistic worlds; the relation between marketing and financing dance; the importance of communication in marketing; the challenges and problems of expanding one's audience; the question of whether marketing is appropriate to experimentalism; making compromises between experimentalism and economic survival.
