Summary
  1. Performance by the Cuban music and dance group Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, recorded in the WGBH television studio during its first tour of the United States. The performance is intercut with archival footage of Cuba, and interviews with artistic director Armando Valladares and some of the musicians. The program includes Valladares's description of the company's origins, and a brief history of the Cuban rumba, which was transplanted from Spain and fused with African traditions to emerge in its current form in the late 19th century. Valladares recalls the proscription on playing the rumba, coupled with racial prejudice, in Cuba of the 1940s and 50s. The performance presents examples of the three main styles of Cuban rumba--Guaguancó, Yambú, and Columbia--all of which integrate instrumental music, singing, and dancing.
