- Interviewed on the occasion of the publication of Joan Acocella's book Baryshnikov: in black and white, Mikhail Baryshnikov discusses his lack of regrets about leaving Russia; his defection in Toronto; his film performances in The turning point and White nights; his recent return to Russia, and his lingering rancor; his performances as a child; how he learned English; his current dancing capacity after knee operations; his admiration for Fred Astaire; his studies in Russia with ballet teacher Aleksandr Pushkin; reasons for his decision to leave Russia; the activities of the White Oak Dance Project, which he co-founded and directs; coming to terms with his loss of youthful virtuosity; performing alongside Frank Sinatra; his friendship with Rudolf Nureyev; his domestic life and children; his lack of belief in conventional marriage; the difficulty of balancing the demands of art and family life; his mixed feelings about his celebrity status; his experience of the Sept. 11 attacks; his awareness of his eventual retirement from the stage; his enjoyment of golfing. Footage of his student days in Russia includes views of his teacher Aleksandr Pushkin. Gregory Hines is seen giving a speech in honor of Baryshnikov at the Kennedy Center Honors.
