Summary
  1. Profile of Mary Anthony, dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She describes her childhood attraction to dance; leaving home for New York City, where her friendship with poet Richard Price began her lifelong interest in literature; her first view of Martha Graham's dancing; studying dance at Hanya Holm's studio with Louise Kloepper; performing and teaching with New Dance Group; the formation of her own company, Mary Anthony Dance Theatre; her dance work Threnody, based on Synge's play Riders to the sea; performing in and choreographing musicals on Broadway and abroad; the creation of Songs, inspired by her love for Cameron McCosh; the opening of her first dance studio; her pioneering work in dance on television, particularly in the WCBS-TV series Look up and live; teaching movement for actors at the HB Studio; her creation of In the beginning, based on the story of Adam and Eve, for dancers Ross Parkes and Yuriko Kimura; the contributions of other choreographers to her company's repertory; her struggles against threats of eviction from her dance studio in New York City; her company's 40th anniversary and her 80th birthday in 1996. Throughout the program she shares her insights about what it means to be an artist, both as performer and choreographer; the qualities she seeks to instill and nurture in her students and company members; and her belief in the truth of movement, and the transcendental effects of arts on human life. The interviewees, who include colleagues and former company members, pay tribute to her extraordinary achievement and contributions to American modern dance.
