- Summary
- In this episode of the television program Speaking freely, Edwin Newman interviews Merce Cunningham and John Cage about their work in dance and music. Subjects discussed include: Cunningham's use of chance operations and indeterminacy in his choreography; Cage's decision to stop acting as music director of the Cunningham company, his attitude towards authority and government, and his musical collaborations; the relationship between music and dance in Cage and Cunningham's collaborations; Cunningham's departure from traditional ballet and modern dance technique; Cage's interest in noise, and his ideas about musical vs. non-musical sound and silence vs. sound; Cage's pieces for prepared piano, his interest in Zen Buddhism, and his composition 4'33", no. 1; Cunningham's use of stillness and non-dance movements in his choreography, and his ideas about the importance of training, practice and technique in dance; Cunningham and Cage's attitude towards audience and public response to their work, their financial dependence on patronage, and their attitudes towards government support for the arts.
