Summary

1. Documentary on how the musical Miss Saigon made its way to Broadway. The show is set in Vietnam in the the closing days of the war in 1975. Topics covered include the worldwide search for Miss Saigon; casting and auditions for the musical, including the selection of Lea Salonga for the leading role of Kim and Monique Wilson as her understudy, with interviews with the performers; the rehearsals; and the premier. The film features producer Cameron Mackintosh, composer Claude-Michel Schönberg, director Nicholas Hytner, orchestrator, William D. Brohn, choreographer Bob Avian, musical supervisor Martin Koch, musical supervisor David Caddick, graphic designer Russ Eglin, production designer John Napier, and star Jonathan Pryce. The documentary also devotes attention to the controversy surrounding the show's casting, provoked by Mackintosh's selection of Pryce, a white British actor, in the Eurasian lead role of the Engineer. Actors' Equity initially barred Pryce from appearing in the show on Broadway on the grounds that part should go to an Asian actor, and then later reversed its decison. The topic of minority and non-traditional casting in the theater is explored further in another interview with Salonga, and in a round-table discussion with Pan Asian Repertory Theatre director Tisa Chang, producer Elizabeth McCann, and performers Francis Ruivivar and Hinton Battle.
