Summary

This program includes a panel discussion about collaborations between poets and composers, interspersed with performances of three such collaborations, and with unaccompanied readings by the poets. Biography (note)
  1. Turns and turns into the night was commissioned by Words & process at the Guggenheim from Anthony Cornicello, who set his music to pre-existing poems by Alice Fulton. The composition received its premiere performance during this program. The words for Philomel, which was commissoned by singer Bethany Beardslee and premiered in 1964, were specifically written by John Hollander to be set to a synthesized score by Milton Babbitt. The virginal book was a pre-existing John Hollander poem that Babbitt set to music.
