Summary
  1. This program features a panel discussion of the New York City Opera's new production of Douglas Moore's The ballad of Baby Doe, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the opera. The panelists discuss the 1956 work's status as an American opera dealing with American themes, the influence of popular music in Moore's compositions, and the sometimes blurred distinctions between opera and musical theatre. Other topics of discussion include the historical basis of John La Touche's libretto, and the complexity of the set design. The singers talk about their characterizations and the difficulty of both conveying the opera's dramatic content and meeting its vocal demands. A few film clips from the 1950s of Moore discussing The ballad of Baby Doe are also screened as part of the program.
