Description

Summary
  1. This program features a panel discussion about Henry Street Chamber Opera's production of Bohuslav Martinů's one-act 1928 Dadaist opera Les larmes du couteau, preceded by performance excerpts from the piece and a lecture and slide presentation on Dadaism by cultural historian Mary Ann Caws. Caws provides background on the Dadaist movement of the 1910s and 1920s, discussing such key figures as Tristan Tzara, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, Richard Huelsenbeck, George Grosz, Kurt Schwitters, and Hans Arp, and emphasizing the more joyous, playful aspects of the movement. The panelists discuss the difficulty of recreating the spontaneous, chaotic spirit of Dada in an operatic production, and how they met the challenges posed by Martinů's often unreproduceable stage directions. The program ends with a performance of the complete opera.
