Description

Summary
  1. This program features a panel discussion of a new production of Jack Beeson's Lizzie Borden at the New York City Opera, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the opera. Panelists discuss the creation of the opera, from Beeson's work with original scenario writer Richard Plant to his collaboration with librettist Kenward Elmslie, to its 1965 debut at New York City Opera. The creators and other panelists also discuss the work's musical eclecticism, the actual murder case, the dramatic license taken in the opera, and its connection to the Electra myth. The singers discuss their characterizations, and help to situate Lizzie Borden and her family in the context of 1890s social restraints on women. The director talks about the primacy of empathy in her approach, and the set designer describes his minimalist setting for the production.
