Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (55 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. This documentary goes beyond the hula stereotypes promoted by Hollywood and tourism to examine the cultural and spiritual meaning of the hula and how hula tells the history of Hawaii through music, language, and dance. Focusing on the perpetuation of hula among Hawaiians living in California, the film features three kumu hula, or master hula teachers, Sissy Kaio, Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu, and Patrick Makuakāne, who are interviewed and seen at work; the dancers of their halaus [i.e. schools] are seen in rehearsals, performances and competitions, including the Merrie Monarch Festival in Honolulu. The kumu hulas discuss their experience as immigrants and the controversies surrounding traditional vs. modern adaptations of hula.
