Description
  1. 1 sound disc (ca. 65 min.) : digital; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Track 1 (ca. 29 min.). 04/15/84. Sophie Maslow speaks about taking choreography classes with Louis Horst at the Neighborhood Playhouse [School of the Theatre]; working with Horst in connection with his lecture-demonstrations after Maslow joined Martha Graham's company, including an anecdote about Graham and Maslow's choreography; Horst's acuity as a critic; Maslow's work Voices [short gap]. Dan Wagoner reminisces about taking class with Horst at Connecticut College; anecdotes about Horst; Wagoner's choreographic process. Anna Sokolow speaks about Horst and his teaching methods [sound quality is poor]. Senta Driver reminisces about Louis Horst as a teacher [sound quality is poor]; Pearl Lang speaks about Horst as a teacher; her work Shira. Martha Clarke remisces about Horst as a teacher. [Unidentified music from ca. 29 min. to ca. 34 min.]
  2. Track 1 , cont., and track 2 (ca. 36 min.). 04/22/84. [This portion of the recording begins ca. 34 min. into track 1. The sound quality is poor until ca. 4:30 min. into track 2.] Harold Baldridge introduces the speakers Joanne Woodward and Marion Seldes. Woodward, Seldes, and Baldridge reminisce about their experiences as students of Louis Horst at the Neighborhood Playhouse School [of the Theatre]; after a short gap, Woodward reads aloud a letter from Martha Graham about Horst. The rest of the recording [ca. 15 min., beginning at ca. 4:30 min. into track 2] is a repetition of the recording of the Baldridge, Woodward, and Seldes discussion and the reading of Graham's letter, but the sound quality is much better than that of the first iteration.

Note
  1. The first ca. 34 min. of track 1 is primarily a recording of Sophie Maslow, Dan Wagoner, Anna Sokolow, Senta Driver, Pearl Lang and Martha Clarke speaking before a public audience about their experiences in Louis Horst's classes, at Riverside Church, in New York City, on April 15 1984, as part of the Riverside Dance Festival. The remaining portion of track 1 (ca. 11 min.) and first ca. 5 min. of track 2 is a recording of Harold G. Baldridge, Joanne Woodward, and Marian Seldes reminiscing before a live audience about about their experiences as students in Louis Horst's class at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, in New York City on April 22, 1984 followed by an unidentified speaker who reads aloud a letter from Martha Graham about Horst; this is followed in turn,by a repetition of the Baldridge, Woodward, and Seldes discussion and the reading of the letter. However, the sound quality of this latter portion is much better than the first iteration of the same material.
  2. The sound quality overall ranges from good to poor. Also, the recording is marred by a continuous hissing noise.
