- Summary
- Cori Ellison moderates a panel discussion about Richard Rodney Bennett's opera, The mines of sulphur. Ellison opens by describing the gothic genre of this opera. She then introduces panelist Richard Rodney Bennett, also known for his many film scores including Murder on the Orient Express and Far from the madding crowd, as well as his career as a jazz pianist and singer. Bennett discusses the origins of the opera; his collaboration with librettist Beverley Cross; the history of the production, which premiered at Sadler's Wells in London in 1965; the influence of Hans Werner Henze; his compositional style; and his use of particular musical motifs. Director David Schweizer joins the panel and discusses how he became involved in this production. He and Bennett then describe the plot of the opera. The singers join the panel and discuss each of their roles in the opera. The panel discussion is interspersed with selections from the opera.
