Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS) (29 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. Susan Stroman discusses her career with Newsday critic Linda Winer. Stroman relates that she knew as a child that she wanted to be a choreographer. Since then, she has become a Broadway pioneer as a woman director/choreographer of major hit shows, such as Contact (1999) and The producers (2001), for which, combined, she earned three of her five Tony Awards. Stroman speaks about the creation of Contact, which contains virtually no words, and which some in the theater community initially found difficult to categorize; her choreography of the George Gershwin musical Crazy for you, which made her work more widely known; her marriage to director Mike Ockrent, who died of leukemia in 1999; her exposure to show tunes by her piano-playing salesman father; her passion for music, and early experiences with dance and choreography; coming to New York City as a dancer intent on choreographing; her admiration for the choreography of Jerome Robbins; meeting and working with Mel Brooks; how she views her role as a director/choreographer; choreographing dance concerts versus musical shows; and why she thinks women haven't previously been allowed "control" of Broadway productions.
