Summary
  1. Martin Bookspan moderates a panel discussion with composers who have set poetry to their compositions. Bookspan talks with Jake Heggie about the process Heggie used to set the movement titled Simple, from his work Times of day, as a waltz. Heggie also talks about how he chose to create an opera from the book Dead Man Walking, as well as his association with Frederica von Stade. Bookspan talks with composer Gordon Getty about what drew him to the poetry of Emily Dickinson in his song cycle, The white election; his opera Plump Jack, based on Falstaff by William Shakespeare; and his purely instrumental compositions. Bookspan also talks with composer David Garner about what he looks for when he sets prose to music and about the poets, Annette von Droste-Hulshoff and Maya Angelou, whose works are performed in this program.
