- Summary
- Martin Wechsler, program director for the Joyce Theater, moderates two panel discussions which are interspersed with excerpts from several dance pieces. In the first panel, Wechsler talks with Ryan Kelly and Brennan Gerard, artistic directors of Moving Theater. Kelly and Gerard talk about how they met and decided to work together, as well as what they are trying to accomplish through their work, which they desribe as a hybrid theater and dance. The two also talk about 19th century French authors Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, who inspired their work Without, and their plans for the future development of this work. Wechsler is then joined by Benjamin Millepied, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and artistic director of the Morris Center Dance Program, who talks about his dance work On the other side as well as his current projects. Millepied then coaches Gillian Murphy and Ethan Stiefel on his new duet, to premiere at the Joyce Theater in March 2006. Millepied, with Steve Reich and Daniel Ott, discusses the music for his new work Circular motion and the influence of African drumming on his development as a dancer. Reich speaks about the use of his music by choreographers. The program concludes with an excerpt from Circular motion.
