- Summary
- Martha Clarke discusses her career with Newsday critic Linda Winer. Director and choreographer of such original and innovative works as The garden of earthly delights and Vienna: Lusthaus, both of which were based on works of art, Clarke expounds on their creation. Clarke discusses her upbringing in a musical Jewish family in the Baltimore suburbs; her early interest in dance and studies at Juilliard School under Louis Horst; her work as a dancer-athlete with the Pilobolus Dance Theatre, and her decision to leave the company and begin directing for The Music-Theatre Group under the guidance of producer Lyn Austin; her recent production of Kaos, based on a story by Luigi Pirandello, at the New York Theatre Workshop, and her ups and downs in 1990 when her production Endangered species was cancelled over controversy surrounding its use of animals and people, while she also received a McArthur Foundation "genius" grant, which allowed her to start working on operas.
