Summary

1. Director/choreographer Twyla Tharp speaks with Theater talk co-hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. One of modern dance's most eminent creative forces, Tharp is the creator of Broadway's hit show Movin' out, a "jukebox musical" featuring the songs of Billy Joel. It tells the story of a generation of American youth growing up on Long Island during the 1960s. Tharp, who compares her production to a film or an opera, describes her intention to create a narrative work based on her interpretation of Joel's songs, and how achieving the final product resulted from years of working closely with her company of dancers. Tharp expounds on how she choreographs, her decision to redirect the show, eliminating all dialogue, following its poor reception in Chicago, and her indebtedness to choreographer Jerome Robbins.
