Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film and stage actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman speaks about his upbringing in Fairport, New York, acting in high school, attending New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, being cast by director Austin Pendleton in his first professional roles, and launching his film career. Hoffman elaborates on his major roles in such motion pictures as Scent of a woman, Boogie nights, Happiness, Flawless opposite Robert De Niro, in which he played a man who wanted to be a woman, Magnolia directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and The talented Mr. Ripley. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of these works. Hoffman speaks about his current involvement in the Broadway revival of Sam Shepard's True West, in which he alternates the main roles of Lee and Austin with actor John C. Reilly; his involvement with the LAByrinth Theater Company, as both actor and director; and what he seeks as an actor from a director. A brief question and answer session with Hoffman and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
