- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film and television actor James Woods. Woods speaks about his family and the impact of his father's death when Woods was 12; attending MIT where he developed his dramatic skills; leaving MIT to pursue an acting career in New York City; moving to Hollywood where he appeared in the 1972 motion picture The visitors, directed by Elia Kazan. Woods examines his role in the 1973 motion picture The way we were starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford; his experience acting in the 1978 television miniseries Holocaust; his role as a psychotic killer in the 1979 film The onion field; his personal favorite role as the gangster Max in the 1984 movie Once upon a time in America, directed by Sergio Leone; his 1986 role in Oliver Stone's motion picture Salvador; his portrayal of a schizophrenic in the 1986 made-for-television movie Promise; his role as Alcoholics Anonymous founder Bill Wilson in the 1989 television movie My name is Bill W.; his title role in the 1992 television movie Citizen Cohn, about controversial lawyer Roy Cohn; and his portrayal of the racist murderer Byron De La Beckwith in Ghosts of Mississippi. Woods elaborates on being typecast as a "bad guy"; how he incorporates himself into his characters; his love of acting; and his technique for portraying heinous, reprehensible characters. A brief question and answer session with Woods and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
