Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with playwright Neil Simon. Simon discusses his approach to writing a play; the autobiographical nature of his work; what he views as "funny"; his approach to writing comedy; the autobiographical elements in his plays Broadway bound and Brighton Beach memoirs; his view of his plays as "abstractions" of reality; revisions of his play The odd couple, when he rewrote the third act during previews; how he helps select actors for his works; the musical aspect of his writing; receiving Tony Awards for his plays Barefoot in the park, Biloxi blues and Lost in Yonkers; the mechanics of his writing, including his process of rewriting and conducting read-throughs of his plays; and lastly "giving up" a completed play. A brief question and answer session with Simon and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
