Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor and film director Gary Sinise. Sinise speaks about his childhood and upbringing in the Chicago, Ill. suburb Highland Park, and his father, a film editor and entrepreneur; performing in rock bands as a youth; his influential high school drama teacher Barbara Patterson; and his founding, along with two friends, of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in the basement of a Catholic school outside of Chicago. Sinise describes the growth and development of the theatrical company, which moved to Chicago, and whose productions such as Sam Shepard's True West and a stage adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel The grapes of wrath gained national acclaim. Sinise discusses his career in motion pictures, following his departure from Steppenwolf, as the director of such films as Miles from home (1988) and Of mice and men (1992), and some of his film roles, including Lt. Dan Taylor in the 1994 motion picture Forrest Gump, in which he played a double amputee Vietnam veteran, astronaut Ken Mattingly in the 1995 movie Apollo 13, on which he worked with Tom Hanks, and Det. Jimmy Shaker in the 1996 motion picture Ransom, directed by Ron Howard. Sinise also speaks about his acting-informed approach to directing; and how he chooses a role. A brief question and answer session with Sinise and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
