Summary
  1. This program focuses on the art of lighting design and the career of Jennifer Tipton. In the first segment, Tipton gives a lecture-demonstration with Dana Reitz as a model; Tipton shows the technique of focusing; the various types of lighting that can be used and their visual effects; and a set of lighting cues presented in various rhythms. Reitz performs dance improvisations, including one derived from Circumstantial evidence, a piece created by Tipton and Reitz in 1988. In the first panel discussion, Tipton and Reitz discuss the idea of lighting space vs. lighting bodies; the performer's relation to the lighting; adapting to working in different spaces; the influence of the audience. A scene from The glass menagerie is performed with lighting cues but without scenery, and then with scenery. Between the two performances, Tipton discusses the difference between lighting dance and theater, the relation of lighting to dialogue and sets.
