American Ballet Theatre, preserving the classics Works & process at the Guggenheim
Title
American Ballet Theatre, preserving the classics [videorecording] : Works & process at the Guggenheim / [performance series producer, Mary Sharp Cronson].
This program looks at how American Ballet Theatre preserves and revives classic ballets. Excerpts from full-length works scheduled for the company's spring 2008 season are interspersed with commentary from artistic director Kevin McKenzie, who discusses the ballets on the program, their origins and their history at ABT. McKenzie also speaks about what makes a ballet a classic; how ballet technique has changed since the 19th century; the preservation of traditional mime in ballet; the adoption of newer works into the ABT's repertory; and the process by which ballets are revived. McKenzie coaches two mime excerpts from Swan lake and Giselle and dancers demonstrate mime vocabulary.
