John Butler speaks with Don McDonagh about the first time he auditioned for Martha Graham, including the outfit he wore; his southern upbringing and moving to N.Y.; dancing for Graham on and off for ten years; his relationship with Graham; dancing with Graham in the studio; impressions of Erick Hawkins and the impact he had on the company, including an anecdote about custom-made boots; Graham's relationship with Hawkins; the European tour in which Graham injured her knee; his impressions of Graham's work, including rehearsals with Graham in the studio; interactions with Graham prior to a performance.
