  1. 1 sound tape reel (30:02) : analog, 7 1/2 ips., full track mono.; 7 in.
Summary
  1. Ben Grauer, Walter Toscanini and Arturo Toscanini himself present a captivating story of how in Rio de Janeiro, the 19-year-old young man, a cellist in the orchestra, rose to the occasion and demonstrated to everyone that he was a genius. At the encouragement of the fellow musicians, Toscanini stepped in after a scandal in the opera house led to the cancellation of the performances by the Brazilian conductor, and successfully conducted Aida by memory. He went on to conduct all the following performances of the season to the great acclaim of both the public and the critics. At his young age, he already knew over 60 operas by heart, and in Rio as well as in the future, always conducted without looking at the score. Arturo Toscanini recounts this story and the subsequent events of how upon his return to Italy he got recognition and the position of the conductor, in Italian with Walfredo Toscanini, his grandson, translating.
