Summary
  1. Ben Grauer and Walter Toscanini, the son of Arturo Toscanini, speak about one of the most important periods in the long career of the maestro, the years at La Scala. On December 26, 1898, Toscanini became conductor of this opera theatre with the full power over all artistic decisions, every detail of the theatre requirements including the selection of singers, musicians, repertoire, scenery, costumes etc. Those years are still referred to as the golden years of La Scala. The details of successes and failures, critics' various opinions, stories about premieres, Toscanini's relationships with composers such as Strauss, Wagner, Puccini, and Verdi are recaounted by the son of the conductor.
