- Summary
- This essay on the successful humanization of the urban landscape explores the space left in a city for people after the buildings have been erected. Filmed in San Francisco, Savannah, San Antonio, Atlanta, Boston and New York as well as in the Italian medieval and Renaissance cities of Asolo, Bologna, Cortona, Milan, Perugia, San Gimignano, Todi and Vernaza, it demonstrates that beauty, harmony, and spatial complexity need not be "cosmetic extras." The film considers the human and inhuman aspects of metropolitan life, spatial variety, the textures of architectural detail, and the use of sidewalks, street patterns, walls, trees, plazas and water in urban planning.
