Summary

1. The renowned choreographer George Balanchine began creating ballets in Russia at age 16 and later rose to become the artistic mastermind behind the New York City Ballet before his death in 1983. In this documentary tribute interweaving interviews with archival footage, six ballerinas who performed under his tutelage, describe their experiences "dancing for Mr. B." Maria Tallchief, Mary Ellen Meylan, Melissa Hayden, Allegra Kent, Merrill Ashley and Darci Kistler recall Balanchine's perfectionist but gentle manner and his adherence to a dance philosophy of simplicity in form and dress that came to be known as "the Balanchine look."
