- Summary
- This documentary charts the troubled four-year odyssey of Vinh Dinh, son of a U.S. serviceman and Vietnamese mother, who makes the journey from Vietnamese to American culture, from false dream to harsh reality. Vinh arrives at JFk airport speaking no English and with minimal education. When a child care agency places Vinh with a Long Island family, problems arise almost immediately. Vinh displays no interest in learning English or attending school, chafes at efforts to discipline him, and is caught stealing money and cigarettes. Physical examinations reveal that Vinh is at least three years older than his purported 15 years. When his foster parents decide that they can no longer control him, he is given over to the care of another family, but this arrangement also ends in failure. Placed in a group home, Vinh is arrested for violating curfew regulations and vandalizing the home's kitchen. Six months later, Vinh and a friend are picked up on assault charges. Living with alleged gang members in a Brooklyn apartment, Vinh is again apprehended for assault and robbery and is held at Rikers Island to await trial. Sentenced to 2-6 years, Vinh is last seen at the Cayuga Correctional Facility in upstate New York where he is learning English and vows never to return to gang life.
