Summary
  1. This iconographic version of the Norwegian folktale is enlivened by the lyrical illustrations of Marcia Brown. One spring, three billy goats named "Gruff" planned to climb the mountain and fatten themselves up. On the way, they had to cross a bridge under which lived a great ugly troll. The youngest billy goat tripped over the bridge first arousing the wrath of the monster who threatened to gobble him up. The diminutive goat pleaded with the troll to spare him and wait for the much larger second goat. The second goat attempted to cross the bridge but was also menaced by the troll. This goat forestalled the troll's voracious appetite by telling him that the third goat would certainly make a more bounteous meal. Sparing the second goat, the troll was shocked to confront the third goat, a truly formidable foe who destroyed the monster with his horns and hooves. Reaching the mountain pinnacle, the three billy goats Gruff got so fat they could barely walk.
