Lewis, CIO leader and United Mine Workers Chief, poses with William Green of the American Federation of Labor, after his move in bringing the miners back to the AFL ranks. The U.S. conducts rocket tests using parts from Germany's V-2 models. As part of the Army-Navy experiment known as "Operation Crossroads," the world's fourth atom bomb is exploded at Bikini Atoll. Around the world, Felix Gouin, Socialist leader, takes the helm of France's Provisional Government following the resignation of General Charles DeGaulle. New York greets Winston Churchill before his speech at the Waldorf Astoria in which he expresses his belief that there will be no war with Russia. At a UN Security Council meeting, Russia's delegate Gromyko walks out of the chamber in protest when the Council votes to consider the Russian-Iranian dispute. Hideki Tojo, Japan's war chief at the time of Pearl Harbor, goes on trial before an international tribunal. General MacArthur participates in ceremonies marking Philippine independence. Admiral Byrd prepares for his third Antarctic expedition. Other news items include: Ray Milland's acceptance of Best Actor Award at the Academy Awards, the winning of the Triple Crown by Assault and baseball training camp with Philadelphia Athletics' manager, Connie Mack. The Cardinals win the World Series.
