- Summary
- The protagonist of this troubling story is a Black child who escorts his blind uncle each day to beg on Johannesberg streets. Recognizing what she feels is his inherent genius, a British woman adopts the young boy and sets out to have him educated according to the highest standards of white South African society. This allegory of white intervention in Black problems poses pressing questions on the realization of Black autonomy in a land of white domination.
