Summary
  1. In the January 1988 issue of Cosmopolitan, an article by Dr. Robert E. Gould entitled "Reassuring news about AIDS: a doctor tells why you may not be at risk," asserted that unprotected heterosexual sex posed almost no risk for infection of the AIDS virus. This position, published in a widely disseminated magazine, contradicted official statistical reports that AIDS was the leading cause of death in New York City among women between the ages of 25-34. Appalled and angered by what they regarded as Dr. Gould's irresponsible and dangerous claims, leading feminists and AIDS actvists organized a protest outside Cosmo headquarters and later interviewed the psychiatrist who displayed alarming ignorance concerning AIDS transmission particularly in women. Heated debate continued via the airwaves on television programs like Donahue and Nightline. The controversy served to expose a minefield of medical prejudice in which women are prevented from taking charge of their sexuality and are suspected of lying by doctors when reporting their sexual activity.
