- Summary
- This tribute to early cinema was constructed from color-tinted and toned nitrate films found deteriorating in the attic of an Amsterdam theatre. Through painstaking restoration, these films, dating from the earliest years of the century, are shown in the rich and subtle colors in which they were originally exhibited. Clips from short fiction features, documentaries, travelogues and what appear to be screen tests are alternately speeded up and slowed down in order to call attention to the delicate beauty inherent in nitrate stock. Accompanying the images is an evocative soundtrack that reflects the films' roots in the 19th-century theatrical and operatic tradition.
