Summary

1. This tape is a video document of the 1987 production of Carmen wich Lina Wertmuller directed and Trisha Brown choreographed at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. The piece centers on the makeup session, showing Brown's metamorphosis from that of a contemporary American performer to that of a nineteenth-century Spanish woman. Interlaced with the makeup session are the "choreographic flashes" of dancers Lance Gries and Diane Madden as they rehearse for Act IV. By means of music and moving image, Barr captures the discipline and sensuality of Brown's choreography and the dramatic tension of Wertmuller's staging.
