- Summary
- Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, domestic partners who collaborated on the music and lyrics of the Broadway musical Hairspray, discuss their involvement in a California political controversy concerning Proposition 8, a ballot proposal which prohibited the right of same-sex couples to marry. After the proposal passed Shaiman learned that Scott Eckern, the artistic director of Sacramento's California Musical Theater, supported the measure with a financial contribution. Because Eckern's theater recently produced Hairspray, Shaiman announced that he would no longer permit his work to be performed at the CMT, and when a number of his colleagues followed suit, Eckern resigned. Shaiman and Wittman examine various aspects of the controversy with interviewers Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins.
