- Summary
- Tony Taccone, artistic director of the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California, discusses his career with journalist Robert Hurwitt. He begins by recounting his early work with San Francisco's Eureka Theatre, and examines the impact of the assassinations of politicians Harvey Milk and George Moscone on the company. The violence resulted in the creation of Emily Mann's play Execution of justice, as well as other works of a political nature. Taccone discusses his move from Eureka to the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in the 1980s, describes how the company functions, the process involved in building the theatre's second space, and discusses his professional relationships with colleagues past and present such as Oskar Eustis, Les Waters, and Susan Medak. He also discusses playwright Athol Fugard and his new drama Coming home, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre's current production.
