- Arthur Mitchell discusses his childhood and family; how he started dancing, and auditioning for the Performing Arts High School; how racism affected his life and career; accepting a scholarship to the School of American Ballet; joining New York City Ballet in 1954; his first performance with NYCB in Western symphony with Tanaquil LeClercq; creating the Agon pas de deux with Diana Adams; founding the first national ballet company of Brazil in 1966, which lead to the creation of his Harlem School of the Arts in 1968; discussion of slavery and the Quadroon Ball which Katherine Dunham asked Mitchell to create; meeting Karel Shook and establishing Dance Theatre of Harlem; creating Creole Giselle with Frederic Franklin; his Dancing through Barriers education and community outreach program that began in 1993 in South Africa; Jessye Norman briefly talking about Arthur Mitchell and the Honor! project celebrating the African American cultural legacy that she is curating at Carnegie Hall; and a brief question and answer session.
