Summary
  1. "This volume features a late 19th century carved ivory elephant tusk from the Loango coast of Equatorial Africa given to the University of Kansas in 2004 by Susan and Wolfgang Hamburger of St. Joseph, Missouri. The volume incorporates the papers of a 2005 mini-conference held at the University of Kansas to review the intertwined stories of the ivory's original production, context, and use, as well as its century as a Hamburger family holding. Scholars from the University of Kansas and beyond illuminate the cultural, economic, and political history of Western Equitorial Africa and the manner in which that history, the region, its peoples and cultures have been received in Europe and in North America."--Publisher's description.
