- Summary
- Elegant and wise, [at 79, Lena Horne] personifies both the glamour of Hollywood and the reality of a lifetime battling racial injustice. In this documentary portrait, Horne takes us through this extraordinary journey to reluctant stardom, and her inward search for her own true voice. Included in the portrait are many wonderful clips from her television appearances, including duets with Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and much of her act from celebrated Waldorf-Astoria days. Also includes clips and photographs of Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, Billy Strayhorn (Duke Ellington's arranger), and Martin Luther King, Jr., among others. The conflict with black actors, her interracial marriage to Lennie Hayton, blacklisting from movies and television, and many other struggles and triumphs are candidly presented.
