- Kwame Brathwaite, born in New York in 1938, began his photographic career during the late 1950s as a jazz photographer. During the 1960s, he began to document the Black Arts Movement in Harlem, and the black consciousness movement as represented by the cultural and political events and individuals he photographed. After a visit to Africa in 1968, where he photographed in West and East Africa, he expanded his focus to include the cultural and political events and activities of both continental Africans and persons of African descent in the Western Hemisphere.

- Kwame Brathwaite, born in New York in 1938, began his photographic career during the late 1950s as a jazz photographer.
