Summary
  1. The Singers collection depicts mainly African American vocalists associated with jazz, soul, rock, pop, gospel, opera and other genres. The collection dates from the 1920s to the 1980s and consists mostly of studio portraits as well as a few views of the artists in performance and candid shots, some probably used for publicity purposes. Among the vocalists depicted are Shirley Brown, Chubby Checker, Lamont Dozier, Little Eva, Buddy Miles, Jackie Moore, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Ike and Tina Turner as well as opera singers Seth McCoy, Leona Mitchell and Jessye Norman. Images from the 1920s to the 1950s are limited as are photos of vocalists based outside the United States. Other photograph collections containing images of vocalists include Entertainers, Vocal Groups, Musical Groups, the Portrait Collection, the Helen-Armstead Johnson Photograph Collection, and the Frederick D. Murphy Photograph Collection.
