- Biography (note)
- The Society for Black Composers, Inc. was established in 1968 by a group of black composers from the New York City area. It grew out of a concert and symposium held during Composers' Recognition week in January 1968. The aim of the society was to promote and foster black composers and musicians within the black community and enrich the culture of the community at large. By 1969 the membership consisted of over fifty composers, performers, and musicians among them Noel DaCosta, John Duncan, Herbie Hancock, Barbara Cobb, and James Wall. They held regular performances and tours throughout the United States and distributed a bi-monthly newsletter. In 1973 due to financial problems and lack of membership, the society became inactive.
